7-Column CBT Tool for Deep Thought Work
Describe the event objectively. Who? What? When? Where?
2. AUTOMATIC THOUGHT (What went through your mind?)The negative thought that appeared (usually instant, automatic, believed at moment)
3. EMOTIONS (What did you feel?)Name the emotion(s): anxious, sad, ashamed, angry, etc. Rate intensity 0-100%
Which distortion is this? (All-or-nothing, Overgeneralization, Catastrophizing, Mind Reading, Jumping to Conclusions, etc.)
List facts that seemed to support this thought in the moment
6. EVIDENCE AGAINST the thought (What contradicts it?)Times you succeeded, proved it wrong, found a more realistic perspective, or learned something
A thought that's realistic AND more helpful. Not toxic positivity—real, grounded truth.
FINAL EMOTIONS (How do you feel now?)Re-rate your emotions. Usually they've shifted (not gone away—shifted).
Use These Spaces for Additional Records
Fill as many records as you need. One per significant thought or emotion spike. Aim for 1-3 per day.
